What to Expect Before Booking a Bikini Waxing Appointment

Bikini Waxing

So, you’re about to book your first bikini waxing appointment. For those who have never made a waxing appointment before, there’s some important info you should know to make the experience as comfortable and easy as possible. Follow these simple steps, and you’ll have fabulous skin in no time!

Preparing for your bikini waxing appointment

Being well prepared for your waxing session completely changes your experience. After following good instructions, you’ll feel confident and ready! Necesse Aesthetics offers the best bikini waxing services in all of San Jose.

Find a great, professional esthetician

You’ll want to do some research in your area to find someone trusted. Look at local reviews and choose a licensed, professional studio to book your waxing appointment. Vanessa Zamudio at Necesse Aesthetics boasts many glowing, 5-star reviews from a lot of clients! You’ll never go wrong going somewhere with wonderful reviews.

Grow your hair out

No shaving or trimming before your appointment! Make sure you grow your hair out to at least ¼ of an inch. The amount of time this takes depends on you and your genetics. It’s not the same for everyone! The general recommendation to make sure your hair is the proper length is 4 weeks. It sucks to wait that long, and you might be tempted to trim it down, but don’t. Your wax will be worth the wait!

Decide on an bikini shape

This step isn’t totally necessary, but having a general sense of how you want your wax to look will help tremendously. No matter the style, your esthetician will remove as much hair as you feel comfortable with, and want. Look at a basic bikini shapes guide to feel out a style you think works for you.

Other guidelines to follow

Before you go, here are some other tips to follow:

  • Use a non-aspirin product (ibuprofen, advil) to reduce pain and inflammation

  • Exfoliate the area you want to wax two days prior

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol the day of your appointment, because they sensitize your skin.

Who shouldn’t get a bikini wax

Besides the general rules mentioned above, there are other cases where you want to just postpone any waxing appointment for a little bit. If you have a different concern about your skin that’s not listed, consult your doctor. They’ll know which products or prescriptions you’re on may have side effects that mess with your waxing experience.

If you’re taking certain prescriptions or antibiotics

There’s quite a long list of prescriptions and antibiotics that interfere with waxing. Retin-A, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, Renova, Differin, Avage, Avita, Strivectin, Tazorac, Proactiv, Benzoyl Peroxide, or any prescription exfoliants need to be discontinued one week prior to your appointment.

Those products are much easier to stop before your appointment, but topical antibiotics are more difficult. Depending on the type of antibiotic you’re using, you need to stop using it 1 to 6 months before your wax. These medications compromise your skin’s integrity, and result in awful side effects for those who ignore them. Used in conjunction with waxing, these treatments and antibiotics pull, rip, or burn your skin.

When your skin is sensitized for any other reason

Another example of when your skin may be sensitized is in the chance you have an open cut on the area you’re about to have waxed. It probably doesn’t happen too often, but postpone and rebook your appointment until it heals up. Similarly, those who are pregnant or on their period may want to wait. During these times, the pain and inflammation becomes worse than normal. The optimal time to book your appointment is 2 weeks after your period.

Proper post-wax care for your bikinis

Taking care of your skin after your waxing session is just as important as the waxing itself. If it’s your first time, don’t worry! We’re about to cover everything you’ll need to know about preventing ingrown hairs, and limiting inflammation and redness after your bikini waxing.

Things to avoid

For 24 to 48 hours after your waxing appointment, your skin is left sensitized and vulnerable. Some things you need to watch out for include:

  • Don’t go swimming or suntan for 2 to 3 days after waxing. Chlorine and sun damage will affect your freshly waxed skin negatively.

  • Avoid exercise after your wax. Sweat contains bacteria and salt that further inflames and irritates your skin.

  • Planning your bikini wax for a special event or occasion? Book at least 2 days in advance.

Exfoliate and moisturize

It’s imperative to return to your exfoliation and moisturizing routine a couple days after your waxing appointment. Exfoliating at least 2 to 3 times a week limits the number of ingrown hairs that you’ll experience. Pair that with an ingrown hair serum (sold by your esthetician), and, poof! Those pesky bikini bumps will be a thing of the past.

Follow your esthetician’s advice

Everyone’s skin is different. Everything we’ve mentioned so far is general, good practice guidelines. When you come in for your initial consultation and first appointment, expect to be given the best advice for your skin. Estheticians constantly study and learn to give clients the best experience and results possible for your skin.
